You Can Do Better Than These Gifts
Everyone has one day a year when they get to feel especially special, so it's important that we do our best to hype up their big day. It's a lovely opportunity to give back to them, presenting them with gifts that tell them you love them and care about their interests, taste, and personality. That's why these five gifts should never be considered for someone you love's birthday!
1. Plain Socks
Everyone says socks are useful, but usefulness alone does not make a memorable birthday gift. A plain pack of everyday socks is practical, but nowhere near as exciting as birthday presents should be. Unless the person specifically asked for them, socks are best saved for ordinary errands.
2. Generic Scented Candles
A scented candle can be pleasant, but a generic one often feels impersonal. When you don't even put effort into getting a fragrance they'll appreciate, it just comes across as a rushed gift. So if you do choose a candle, make sure it reflects the person’s actual taste.
3. Office Supplies
No one wants to think about work outside of work! Pens, notebooks, and desk organizers may be helpful, but they don't exactly create birthday excitement. Most people prefer a gift that gives them a break from productivity.
4. Supermarket Chocolates
Chocolate is usually welcome, but getting a boring box from the supermarket can feel especially unthoughtful. Just because the receiver will find them tasty, it doesn't mean it'll feel special or personal. A birthday gift should ideally suggest more thought than a quick stop near the checkout.
5. Basic Toiletries
Soap, shampoo, and deodorant are practical items you usually get when running errands, which is why they won't come across so well as a gift. Even when kindly intended, basic toiletries may feel more like household restocking than a celebration. For birthdays, personal-care gifts should feel luxurious, chosen carefully, and clearly optional.
